Slow Days in Shrewsbury, England
There’s something special about certain places, the places that lodge themselves in your memory. For me, one of those places is the riverside playground in Shrewsbury.
This was more than just a park for us – it was a sanctuary of joy and freedom during Covid in this dreamy town. The playground itself is beautifully designed: safe, spacious, and full of creative structures that kept the kids endlessly entertained. But the real magic revealed itself in the summer months, when the water play area came alive.
Soft, springy playground floors kept tumbles gentle, while giant teacups filled with water and tipped over unexpectedly, sending shrieks of laughter through the air. Fountains would spring to life from the ground. Tunnels and splash zones gave the kids just enough unpredictability to stay wildly excited without being overwhelmed.
Watching Lily run barefoot across the water pads, soaked and grinning, was one of those this-is-what-childhood-is-for moments.
Flowers, Footpaths & Family Wanders
Just beyond the playground is a stunning flower garden – thoughtfully planted, carefully tended, and full of colour and scent. It became a little ritual for us to walk through it slowly after playtime, letting the kids wind down as they wandered between blossoms. There were benches in the shade where we’d rest, snacks in hand, while Kira (our faithful German Shepherd) dozed peacefully at our feet.
Shrewsbury itself is a fairytale of a town, with cobbled streets, hidden courtyards, timber-framed houses and riverside trails. Every corner invites wandering, and there’s always something beautiful to stumble upon – a historic building, a tucked-away bookshop, or a view of the River Severn that makes you pause and breathe deeper.
The Memory That Stays 🧡
This photo from the bridge captures more than just a view, it holds the essence of slow summer afternoons, wet socks and belly laughs, and the kind of grounded joy that sneaks up on you when you let go of the rush.
We came for the playground… and stayed for the peace, the laughter, the flowers, and the magic of a town that feels like a storybook.
If you’re visiting Shrewsbury with kids, don’t miss this little gem by the river. Bring a change of clothes, some snacks, and nowhere else to be.
