Winter Magic at Castle Law Hill Fort, Scotland
The first snow of December arrived like a gift! And what better way to embrace it than heading straight into the heart of it? We bundled ourselves into layers of warmth, zipped up our snow suits, packed a thermos of hot chocolate, and set off for an adventure to Castle Law Hill Fort, just south of Edinburgh near the Pentland Hills.
Castle Law is an ancient Iron Age hill fort with centuries of buried stories.
Wrapped in Wonder
Lily was thrilled. It was her first real experience of thick, proper snow – white powder that covered the hill like a blanket. She ran ahead of us, her squeals echoing through the crisp winter air, cheeks flushed and glowing. Kira, our beautiful German Shepherd, was in her absolute element. She bounded through the drifts like a wolf set loose, tail wagging, ears perked, pure joy in motion. Every now and then, she’d leap into a patch of deeper snow and disappear halfway down, paddling her paws like she was swimming through a fluffy white sea. It was impossible not to laugh watching her.

The climb wasn’t easy with the snow piling under our boots, but reaching the top was absolutely worth it. From the summit of Castle Law Hill Fort, the views were spectacular, sweeping across the Pentlands, the valleys, and far into the wintry haze. You could see the glint of snow-covered Edinburgh rooftops in the distance, and beyond that, the faint blue of the sea.
Up there, surrounded by ancient earthworks and silence, we paused. Not for long, it was freezing! but long enough to feel it. The history. The stillness. The sheer beauty of it all.
Castle Law gave us something we didn’t even know we needed – a proper winter moment. One of those memory-stamped days you know will stay with you.
