Where Forest Meets Wetland – Englemere Pond, England

We set out that day expecting a typical woodland walk – muddy boots, sticks & stones thrown for the dog, and a toddler collecting pieces of nature like treasures. But tucked away in the heart of the forest, Englemere Pond turned out to be something far more magical.

For a while, we wandered under the tree canopy along the wooden walkways, surrounded by birdsong and pine-scented air. Every now and then we’d spot what I assumed was “the pond” – giant muddy puddles where Kira (our ever-enthusiastic German Shepherd) would enthusiastically flop in, turning every stick-fetch into a mud-splash-fest 😂

But then the trees opened up… and there it was.

Wetland Wonder

The real Englemere Pond appeared like a quiet secret. A shimmering, open wetland stretched out ahead, framed by reeds and low grasses, with reflections of sky and trees rippling softly on its surface.

It felt like walking into another world – still, spacious, and oddly peaceful. The kind of place that makes you whisper without meaning to. Birds skimmed across the water, and dragonflies hovered like tiny helicopters.

We paused here, just to take it in. Lily tossed pebbles in from the edge, Kira sniffed every reed she could find, and I stood still, marvelling at how easily this place had hidden itself until that moment.

A Walk Worth Finding 🐾

Englemere Pond might not be the most famous beauty spot in Berkshire, but that’s exactly why I loved it. It felt untouched. Quiet trails, soft light, and just the occasional dog walker passing with a friendly nod.

The path loops through woodland and skirts the edge of the wetland, offering perfect little pockets to stop, play, and breathe. It’s ideal for dogs, wild-loving kids, and anyone needing a pause from the busy.

I’d gone in thinking “pond” meant puddle. But what I found was a peaceful wetland oasis tucked deep in the trees.👌
