Virginia Water Lakes, Surrey, England
Family Day at Virginia Water Lake
If you ever need a reset button – Virginia Water Lake is the place. It’s like someone took a fairy tale, added ducks, a waterfall, and space to breathe (and let your kids run wild), and plonked it right into Windsor Great Park.
Every single time we come here, I’m in awe. It’s beautiful. Like “pull the car over, I need to take a photo before we even park” kind of beautiful.
Virginia Water is so family-friendly. The path loops all around the lake, and it’s flat enough for prams, scooters, and tired little legs. You can go all-in and walk the full loop (about 6.5km), or just wander a bit and turn back when someone inevitably falls into a bush or drops their snack.
If your kids are anything like mine, you’ll be stopping every 10 seconds to collect sticks, wave at swans, climb rocks, or inspect “treasures”. And I love it. Even with the snack demands and sudden meltdowns, something about being out there just slows everything down.
Waterfalls, Ruins & Giant Totem Poles
This is not your average stroll-around-the-lake. Along the way, you’ll stumble across:
- A waterfall that’s straight out of a storybook (yes, we took 87 photos there).
- The Roman ruins of Leptis Magna – actual ancient stonework that makes you feel very cultured and clever for knowing what it is.
- A towering Totem Pole that the kids were totally fascinated by.
- And if you feel adventurous, you can even walk all the way toward Windsor Castle.
Don’t miss Savill Garden if you’re into flowers, fancy plants, and peaceful vibes.
Coffee, Toilets & Sanity-Saving Info
Yes, there are toilets. Yes, there’s a café. Yes, you can get coffee. You’re safe.
Parking is paid, bring a card or use the app, and it’s worth arriving early if it’s a sunny weekend.
There are plenty of open grassy spots for picnics too. So pack a blanket, bring all the snacks, and maybe throw in some bubbles or chalk for after-lunch playtime. It’s very “Pinterest mum” but with muddy shoes and half-eaten cheese sandwiches.
Mom Tips Before You Go:
- Comfy shoes – trust me, even if you’re just “doing a short walk,” it always turns into more.
- AllTrails app if you want to track the route or pretend you’re a professional hiker.
- Extra clothes – someone will find a puddle.
- Snacks and bribes – because nature is beautiful, but not as beautiful when the kids are hangry.
- A camera – the views are insane.
Virginia Water Lake is one of those places that feeds your soul, tires out the kids, and makes you feel like you’re doing this whole “family life” thing right. Nature, magic, castles, waterfalls, and happy chaos all rolled into one.
