Leopard Rock Lodge, Madikwe Game Reserve – South Africa
Big 5 in a Day and Bush Bliss for a Week
We’re off on a 7-night bush escape to Leopard Rock Lodge in Madikwe Game Reserve, and I’m already vibrating with excitement. My last safari was at Ulusaba – an utterly dreamy experience that made me fall head-over-heels in love with the wild. So naturally, expectations were high.
Our flight from Cape Town to Lanseria was fairly uneventful, unless you count my usual obsession with staring out the plane window at crop circles and rivers that look like lazy snakes. I would share the photos, but Kalula clearly hadn’t washed their windows since the plane was built.
Once we landed, we picked up our rental car and hit the road for the short-ish drive (just under 3 hours) to Madikwe. Pro tip: load up on snacks and a solid playlist because the scenery gets wild and wonderful fast. Think wide skies, dusty roads, and a silence that stretches.
Leopard Rock Lodge.
Honestly? Stunning. It’s the kind of place that makes you sigh when you arrive. A gorgeous home-style lodge with a communal kitchen and living area, it still gives you all the privacy you need with individual villas spaced out along winding pathways. Each one has its own en-suite bathroom, a little sitting area, and the basic tea/coffee fixings for early mornings when caffeine must come before lions.
The main lodge has all the spoils: a big kitchen, a cozy lounge, a dining space, a bar, a TV room (but who watches TV when elephants are walking past?), and a deck overlooking the waterhole where we saw impala, zebra, and even rhino just casually dropping by. There’s also a pool surrounded by sun loungers, a short walk to the fire pit, jacuzzi, and braai area – perfect for storytelling, wine, and a bit of stargazing while the jackals call.
And then there’s Nadia, our ranger. What a rock star! Warm, smart, and clearly part animal whisperer, part comedian. Within one day, she had us ticking off the Big 5 – yes, you read that right – all five on day ONE. Elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, rhino. Boom. I honestly felt like the safari gods were showing off.
Each game drive brought more magic: cheetah lounging in golden grass, wild dogs darting through the bush, giraffes awkwardly racing each othe, and sunsets so outrageously beautiful they looked fake. And the smells – earthy, warm, wild. There’s something about the bush that gets into your soul and stretches it wide.
Evenings were lazy and lovely, think fire pit, glasses of red wine, and belly laughs.
I still can’t quite put into words what a safari does to you. It pulls you out of your head and drops you deep into the moment. The animals don’t care who you are or what’s on your to-do list. You’re just another creature under the same big sky.
Would I recommend Leopard Rock Lodge in Madikwe?
Without a doubt. Especially if you’re craving both connection and solitude, wildness and comfort, adventure and stillness.
Just pack your sunscreen, your camera, and your willingness to fall wildly in love with the African bush. You’ve been warned. 🐘
