Healing & Growth,  My Journey

Healing the trauma of childhood sexual abuse

Healing from childhood sexual abuse is not a straight line. It’s not a checklist or a timeline you can pin on your wall and tick off as you go. For many of us, it takes decades, if not a lifetime to unravel the mess that trauma left behind.

The abuse may be in the past, but the echoes live on. What’s often harder to shake than the memories are the behaviours we learnt during the trauma. Survival mechanisms. Coping patterns. The way we dissociate, people-please, freeze under pressure, or struggle to trust. Especially when the abuse went on for a long time, those behaviours can feel like part of who we are.

But they’re not. They’re adaptations. They are not our truth.

Healing means gently noticing those patterns without shame. It’s okay if it’s taking time. It’s okay if you’re still triggered, still learning, still finding your voice. There is no “late” on this journey. You are not broken – you are healing. And that’s powerful.

You are allowed to outgrow what hurt you.
